Abstract

Background: Self-medication is an attempt by the community to treat themselves to overcome minor complaints and diseases that are often experienced by the community, such as stomach ulcers. An ulcer is one of the digestive tract disorders caused by the inflammatory process. Antacids are drugs that have a mechanism of action by neutralizing stomach acid.

Objective: This study aims to determine the profile of self-medication use of antacids at X Pharmacy, Yogyakarta.

Method: This study used a cross-sectional design, collecting data through questionnaires from 15 respondents who self-medicated with antacids. Respondents' demographic data included gender, age, occupation, and education. Data processing was carried out using Microsoft Excel.

Results: Of the 15 respondents, the majority of individuals engaging in self-medication with antacids were female (53%). The suspension form of antacid was the most commonly selected preparation for self-medication. Furthermore, the duration of antacid use for self-medication predominantly ranged from 1 to 7 days (80%).

Conclusion: Women are more often using antacids for self-medication in Pharmacy X, Yogyakarta. They prefer suspension preparations and drugs used for a short duration (1-7 days). The results of this study can be used as information to improve public understanding of the proper use of antacids.
