Abstract

This study explores the role of the wali in spreading Islam in Java by adapting local customs such as wayang and religious ceremonies, which allowed for the acceptance of Islam without disrupting social and cultural balance. Kampung Mahmud in Bandung Regency, founded by Eyang Abdul Manaf in the 15th century, is used as a case study. Using a qualitative approach that includes participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and a literature review, the research reveals that Kampung Mahmud's religious traditions preserve cultural and spiritual values and unify the community in the modern era. Effective methods include adapting local customs like wayang and religious ceremonies, which facilitate the acceptance of Islam without disturbing social and cultural balance. Kampung Mahmud, established by Eyang Abdul Manaf in the 15th century, was selected as a case study to demonstrate how traditions and religious ceremonies can endure in the modern era. In conclusion, AI can enhance local communities' cultural preservation and economic well-being through government, academics, and community collaboration.
