Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  • You have read and followed the journal’s [focus and scope], [policies], [instructions], and [submission process].
  • You have prepared your manuscript according to the journal’s [template] and [style guide].
  • You have checked your manuscript for spelling, grammar, formatting, figures, tables, equations, references, etc.
  • You have obtained the necessary permissions for any third-party material included in your manuscript, such as images, data, code, etc.
  • You have declared any conflicts of interest, ethical issues, or funding sources related to your manuscript.
  • You have ensured that your manuscript is original and has not been published or submitted elsewhere, in whole or in part.
  • You have acknowledged and cited any sources that have influenced or supported your research and publication.
  • You have verified that your manuscript does not contain any plagiarism or self-plagiarism by using a plagiarism detection software such as Turnitin.
  • You have prepared a list of three to five potential reviewers who have expertise and experience in the relevant field of biomedical engineering and technology. The list should include their names, affiliations, email addresses, and reasons for suggesting them. The list should not include anyone who has a conflict of interest with you or your manuscript.

Author Guidelines

Carefully read the submission guidelines as follows:

1. General Requirement

The minimum standard requirements of the Journal of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Technology must be

  1. Written in Indonesian or English.
  2. The author’s name should be accompanied by a complete affiliation address and corresponding email (for the corresponding author).
  3. The length of the submitted paper is at least 4 pages and no more than 12 pages. Editors will be evaluated if the papers need more pages than 12 pages.
  4. Use a tool such as Mendeley, Zotero, or EndNote for reference management and formatting, and choose IEEE Style
  5. Make sure that your paper is prepared using the JBEU paper template  (in English) or JBEU Indonesia template

2. Structure of The Manuscript

The manuscript must be prepared, and suggested present following the structure:

  1. Title. The title of the paper typed in sentence case, without an Acronym or abbreviation, case study
  2. Abstract. Written briefly in English and Indonesian in one paragraph of 150-250 WORDSNo citation; State in the abstract a primary objectiveresearch designmethodologymain outcomes and results, and the conclusion.
  3. Section structure. Authors are suggested to present their articles in the section structure: IntroductionMethodResults and DiscussionConclusionAcknowledgementReferences
  4. References. Expect a minimum of 15 references with a minimum of 80% references primarily.

Author Guidelines

The Journal of Biomedical Engineering Science and Technology (JBEU) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal that publishes original research articles, review articles, and case studies in all areas of biomedical engineering and technology. The journal aims to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, clinicians, and students to share their latest findings and innovations in biomedical engineering and technology.

The journal follows the highest standards of academic integrity and ethics. The journal does not tolerate any form of plagiarism or self-plagiarism in the manuscripts submitted to the journal. The journal uses Turnitin online plagiarism detection software to screen all manuscripts for plagiarism and self-plagiarism. The journal follows the COPE Guidelines for dealing with cases of plagiarism and self-plagiarism.

The journal covers the costs of publication by charging an article processing charge (APC) to the authors or their institutions or funders. The journal offers discounts and waivers on the APC for eligible authors.

Before submitting your manuscript to JBEU, please read the following information and guidelines carefully.

Submission Process

The journal accepts submissions online through its website. The authors need to register and log in to the online submission system to submit their manuscript. The authors can also track the status of their submissions and communicate with the editors through the online submission system.

The authors are encouraged to follow the journal’s template as much as possible to facilitate the review process. The authors are also encouraged to check their manuscript for spelling, grammar, formatting, figures, tables, equations, references, etc. before submission.

The authors need to provide the following information and files when submitting their manuscript:

  • Manuscript title
  • Manuscript type (research article, review article, or case study)
  • Abstract (up to 250 words)
  • Keywords (3-6 words)
  • List of potential reviewers (optional)
  • Cover letter (optional)
  • Manuscript file (in Word format)
  • Supplementary material (optional)
  • Data, code, and materials (optional)

Manuscript Preparation

The manuscript should be prepared according to the following guidelines:

  • Manuscript length: The manuscript should not exceed 10,000 words for research articles, 8,000 words for review articles, and 5,000 words for case studies. These word limits include the abstract, main text, references, tables, and figure captions. The word count does not include supplementary material.

  • Manuscript language: The manuscript should be written in clear and concise English or Bahasa Indonesia. Spelling should be British English. Abbreviations should be used only when necessary and should be defined when they are first used. SI units should be used throughout.

  • Manuscript structure: The manuscript should be structured as follows:

    • Title page: The title page should include the manuscript title, author names, affiliations, corresponding author’s email address, acknowledgments (optional), funding sources (optional), conflicts of interest statement (mandatory), and author contributions statement (mandatory).
    • Abstract: The abstract should summarize the main objectives, methods, results, and conclusions of the manuscript in up to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any references or abbreviations.
    • Keywords: The keywords should consist of 3-6 words that reflect the main topics or themes of the manuscript.
    • Introduction: The introduction should provide the background and context of the research problem, state the research objectives or questions, and summarize the main contributions or findings of the manuscript.
    • Methods: The methods section should describe the design, procedures, materials, equipment, data sources, data analysis methods, and ethical considerations of the research in sufficient detail to allow replication by other researchers.
    • Results: The results section should present and summarize the main findings of the data analysis in a logical and coherent manner. Tables and figures should be used to illustrate or support the results.
    • Discussion: The discussion section should interpret and explain the results in relation to the research objectives or questions, compare and contrast them with existing literature or knowledge, discuss their implications or limitations, and suggest directions for future research or practice.
    • Conclusions: The conclusions section should provide a brief summary of the main findings and contributions of the manuscript, highlight their significance or relevance for biomedical engineering and technology, and state the main conclusions or recommendations derived from them.
    • References: The references section should list all sources cited in the manuscript in numerical order. The journal uses the IEEE style for referencing. Please refer to this guide for examples of how to cite different types of sources.
    • Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (e.g., Table 1) and have a brief descriptive caption above them. Tables should be inserted in the main text where they are first mentioned. Tables should be formatted using the table function in Word and not as images. Tables should not exceed one page in length and should not contain any vertical lines.
    • Figures: Figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (e.g., Figure 1) and have a brief descriptive caption below them. Figures should be inserted in the main text where they are first mentioned. Figures should be of high quality and resolution (at least 300 dpi) and saved as separate files in TIFF, EPS, or PDF format. Figures should not exceed one page in width and height and should not contain any unnecessary elements or text.
  • Supplementary material: Supplementary material consists of additional information or data that support or enhance the main manuscript but are not essential for its understanding. Supplementary material can include text, tables, figures, videos, audio files, datasets, code, etc. Supplementary material should be numbered consecutively with Roman numerals (e.g., S1, S2) and have a brief descriptive title or caption. Supplementary material should be submitted as separate files along with the main manuscript file.

  • Data, code, and materials: Data, code, and materials are the raw or processed data, computer code, software, algorithms, protocols, materials, equipment, etc. that are used or generated in the research reported in the manuscript. The journal encourages the authors to make their data, code, and materials publicly available and accessible to other researchers for verification, replication, reuse, or extension of the research. The authors can deposit their data, code, and materials in a suitable repository or archive and provide a link or identifier (e.g., DOI) to them in the manuscript. Alternatively, the authors can upload their data, code, and materials as supplementary material along with the main manuscript file.

Editorial Policies

The journal adheres to the following editorial policies:

  • Peer review: The journal follows a double-blind peer review process, where the identities of the authors and reviewers are concealed from each other. The journal aims to provide a fair, rigorous, and timely peer review process for all manuscripts submitted to the journal. The journal expects all reviewers to follow the ethical guidelines for peer reviewers as outlined by COPE.
  • Publication ethics: The journal follows the ethical standards and guidelines for publication as outlined by COPE. The journal does not accept any form of academic misconduct, such as fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or duplication. The journal also does not accept any form of unethical behavior by authors, reviewers, editors, or publishers. The journal reserves the right to take appropriate actions against any cases of publication or research ethics violations.
  • License to publish and open access: The journal is an open-access journal that publishes all articles under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC-BY) license. This allows anybody to copy, distribute, and reuse the articles for any purpose, as long as they give proper credit to the original authors and source. The authors retain the copyright of their work and grant the journal a non-exclusive license to publish their article.
  • Article processing charge (APC): The journal covers the costs of publication by charging an article processing charge (APC) to the authors or their institutions or funders. This is a flat fee that applies to all types of articles and does not depend on the length, color, or format of the article. The APC is payable only after the article has been accepted for publication by the editor. The APC is subject to change without prior notice.
